Spirit Fall to Whalers 4-3

The Saginaw Spirit lost to the Plymouth Whalers Monday afternoon at the Compuware Ice Arena of Plymouth, snapping a five game consecutive win streak. Despite the loss the Spirit still lead the OHL Western Conference with 64 points and 30-9-3-1 record, and head into next weeks action with an eight point lead over the second place Owen Sound Attack.
The game started off with an early Spirit power play goal at 3:02 of the first period, scored by center Vincent Trocheck with assists going to center John McFarland and defenseman Ben Chiarot. The Whalers answered with a goal moments later at the 8:49 mark, scored by winger Rickard Rakell. The action continued with winger Josh Shalla scoring his thirty-fourth goal of the season at the 13:28 mark courtesy an assist from defenseman Brandon Archibald, moving the score 2-1.
The second period got off to a slow start, with the only goal of the frame notched by Spirit captain Jordan Szwarz 0:53 seconds into play, with assists from Archibald and Shalla. The action heated back up in the third period with a shorthanded Plymouth goal by winger Stefan Noesen courtesy an assist from winger RJ Malahak at the 1:46 mark. The Whalers tied the game at three goals apiece at 5:10 in the third with a goal from James Livingston, assisted by center Mitchell Heard. Plymouth went on to score again at 10:02 in the third, with center Robbie Czarnik notching the goal with assists going to defenseman Dylan MacDonald and winger Jamie Devane. The fourth Whalers goal secured the victory for Plymouth, to the tune of 4-3.
Spirit goalie Mavric Parks notched 34 saves on 38 shots, while Whalers goalie Scott Wedgewood had 30 saves on 33 shots.
