Edmonton Eagles record historic first victory

After three losses at the hands of the Cold Lake Aeros to start their campaign, Edmonton came oh so close to that elusive first. The Eagles dropped a pair of road games, one at Barrhead (9-8) and then Hinton (8-4), before the historical win on their home ice. In both previous losses the Eagles out shot their opponent by a wide margin.

Edmonton took an early 1-0 lead on Sunday when Dallas Sparklingeyes finished a play set up by Milan Constant and Will Shott. The lead didn’t last long after Vegreville tied the game with a powerplay goal.

The Eagles quickly regained the lead though when Dalton Seniantha assisted on a Saihaj Kahlon tally. The score remained 2-1 at first intermission.

Each team scored a goal in the second period. Tyrell Shott struck first with an assist from Kaiden Anaskon making it 3-1 early in the period.

Penalties continued to be an ‘achilies’ for the Eagles though as much of the period was played shorthanded. Mykyta Protsenko eventually scored on the powerplay to get the Vipers back within a goal.

Leading 3-2 to begin the third, Edmonton came out of the locker room determined. It didn’t take long before Colby Agecoutay-Houle scored what would be the game winner after a perfect feed from Schott who notched his third point of the game.

Another powerplay goal by Vegreville made it 4-3 near the midway point of the final frame, but Eagles goaltender Nathan Pearson would not be denied a win making several big saves over the final 10 minutes to secure the victory. It was also the first win of his Junior career for the 17-year old netminder from Stony Plain.

A three-game set is next for Edmonton who travel to Barrhead this Friday night. The Eagles return to Enoch to host Cold Lake on Saturday before wrapping up the weekend facing Hinton.
