Barrhead Bombers win a pair to remain unbeaten

Three games into the new WSHL season and the Barrhead Bombers find themselves unbeaten! The Bombers took another pair of victories on home ice this weekend, including a wild 9-8 victory over the Edmonton Eagles on Sunday.

Barrhead native Brendan Bujold capped off a spectacular weekend with seven points in the Edmonton victory. The 19-year old forward completed his hat trick late in the second period before adding his fourth assist later in the third.

Another former Barrhead Bruins player, Jeremy DeVries contributed with a pair of goals and two assists.

As the teams exchanged goals the entire 60 minutes Chad Esperence scored last with just 4:22 remaining in regulation to break the 8-8 deadlock. It was the second goal of the game for Esperence, a veteran who played his youth hockey with the Beardy’s Blackhawks.

Presley Toth and Jason Kelly also scored for the Bombers while RJ Eagle Bear and Kelly chipped in with three assists each.

The previous night saw the Bombers face the Hinton Timberwolves for the second time this season. After winning the first matchup 6-4 Barrhead needed extra time and then a shootout to down the visitors 4-3.

Hinton opened scoring in this one, but Owen Weeks evened things near the midway point of the opening frame. The score remained 1-1 after 20 minutes.

David Charest gave the Bombers a lead early in the second finishing a play started by Joshua Kochan. Alac Rice and Austin Strathdee teamed up with Esperence for the third tally to make it 3-1 after 32 minutes.

The Timberwolves would battle back in the third though with a powerplay goal from Gabriel Caron-Lalancette before Jack Annis tied it 3-3 with 2:59 to play.

After a scoreless overtime period of three-on-three play the teams headed to a shootout. Barrhead scored first when Toth found the back of the net in the second round. Hinton responded with a goal in the next round, but two straight conversions helped the Bombers to grab the victory.

Next up for Barrhead is a pair of road games, their first of the season. The Bombers will head to Vegreville on Friday to face the Vipers then travel northeast to take on the first place Cold Lake Aeros. Both games will stream live on Black Dog Hockey.
